Overcoming Your Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

At Broadwing Dental Studio, we understand that many patients wait until they have unbearable tooth pain before setting foot in a dentist's office. Our board-certified anesthesiologist and patient-centered team are pleased to offer a range of sedation dentistry options to provide you with anxiety relief, transforming your dental experience. We strive to provide you with stress-free care that exceeds your expectations!

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry, often referred to as sleep dentistry, involves the use of medications to help patients achieve a calm, relaxed state during dental treatment. At Broadwing Dental Studio, we offer different sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Our experienced dental team will recommend the ideal solution to ensure you enjoy exceptional, anxiety-free care.

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas): We'll administer nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen through a mask, leaving you feeling calm and relaxed before you know it. You will remain awake and responsive to direction. As soon as treatment is over, the effects of nitrous oxide will wear off, allowing you to safely drive home and get on with your day without interruption.
  • Moderate Oral Sedation (Conscious Sedation): Oral conscious sedation can range from mild to moderate. It involves taking oral medication before your procedure to help you feel calm and relaxed. The effects of sedation may take some time to wear off, which is why you'll need to ask a trusted adult to drive you home and stay with you for some time.
  • Deep Sedation / Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Sedative medication is administered using an IV, with almost immediate effects. You'll feel deeply calm and relaxed and may fall asleep, but will stay conscious during treatment. You will need to have a trusted adult drive you home and care for you until the effects of the sedative wear off completely.
  • General Anesthesia: General anesthesia will leave you completely unconscious, meaning you will be completely comfortable and have no recollection of your treatment. Our experienced anesthesiologist will monitor your vital signs throughout treatment for your safety. You will need to have a trusted adult drive you home and care for you until the effects of the anesthesia wear off completely.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows for anxiety-free dental visits, helping our patients keep up with their twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings, which, in turn, promotes long-term oral health. Our anxiety-free care allows for more treatments to be completed in fewer visits and ensures our valued patients spend less time in the dentist's chair. Depending on the sedation method, many of our patients remember little, if any, of their treatment, reducing the fear of future dental care.

Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Oral sedation may be ideal for the following:

  • Patients experiencing dental anxiety or phobia
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Patients with highly sensitive teeth
  • Patients with a low pain threshold
  • Patients with difficulty getting numb or staying numb using local anesthetics
  • Patients who find it hard to sit still for long periods
  • Patients with complex healthcare needs
  • Patients requiring lengthy, involved, or multiple treatments

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Sedation dentistry has a high safety record. The sedative medications we use here at Broadwing Dental Studio have undergone rigorous studies and have shown a minimal risk of complications.

As with any treatment, our experienced team will ask you about your health history before sedation and will monitor your vital signs at every step, before, during, and after treatment. Your safety and well-being are always our priorities here at Broadwing Dental Studio.
